Often referred to as the "Silent Killer," Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a highly toxic, colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas. Because it is completely undetectable by human senses, you cannot see it, smell it, or taste it.

How is it Produced?

CO is a byproduct of incomplete combustion. It is produced whenever any fuel—such as gas, oil, coal, wood, or charcoal—is burned. In everyday life, common sources of CO include:

Home Appliances: Malfunctioning gas water heaters, boilers, furnaces, and wood-burning stoves.

Vehicles & Engines: Cars, RVs, or portable generators running in enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces (like garages or tents).

Why is it Dangerous?

When inhaled, carbon monoxide deprives your body of oxygen. It binds to the hemoglobin in your red blood cells 200 times more effectively than oxygen, blockading your body's ability to transport oxygen to vital organs like your brain and heart.

Early symptoms of CO poisoning mimic the flu without a fever, which makes it incredibly deceptive:

They are often programmed NOT to trigger until CO levels reach 70 ppm or higher for a prolonged period. U.S. Fire Departments: Firefighters typically equip Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) when entering environments at 25 ppm or higher.
